(OCTOBER 2,
2020) - On Thursday, Congressman Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and others
introduced the Price Reform in Cattle Economics Act or PRICE Act.
Cosponsors include Representatives Darren Soto (D-FL), Mike Conaway
(R-TX), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Frank Lucas (R-OK), Roger Marshall (R-KS),
David Rouzer (R-NC), Glenn Thompson (R-PA), Rick Crawford (R-AR), Greg
Gianforte (R-MT), Mike Hagedorn (R-MN), Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Jason Smith
(R-MO).
The bill makes efforts to include more comprehensive risk
management solutions and build on the recommendations provided by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture in its Boxed Beef
and Fed Cattle Price Spread Investigation Report.
United States Cattlemen's Association (USCA) Vice
President Justin Tupper issued the following statement on the bill:
"The provisions laid out in the PRICE Act provide a
solid foundation with which to build out a Livestock Title in the
next farm bill. Both the 2018 and 2014 Farm Bills failed to include a specific title for livestock,
instead dumping those programs into the 'miscellaneous'
bin.
"The sections included within the PRICE Act offer a
solid base with which to begin constructing a clear, concise, and
dedicated section within the framework of the largest agriculture-related
legislation to bolster the livestock sector."
