Top 10 U.S. Cattle Sales

It was one of the best weeks for feeder cattle sales as many states and auctions set price records for 2022.

The CME September feeder cattle futures closed on Friday (8/12) at $183.375, down $1.225 from Thursday, down 5 cents from the prior Friday (8/5).   It was one of the best weeks for feeder cattle sales as many states and auctions set price records for 2022.

The largest steer and heifer string sold this week was 348 steers (720#) from El Reno, Oklahoma at $184.25 (3rd largest string sold so far at OKC West in 2022).  The second largest string was 283 steers (1016#) also from El Reno, Oklahoma at $159.50.    The average price paid for the largest steer and heifer strings sold this week was $174.22.

There were 67 strings sold this week that were 100 head or larger, compared to 97 last week.  There were 438 strings sold this week that were 50 head or larger, compared to 483 last week.   Despite the lower number of big strings, there were 22 strings sold this week that were $200.00 or higher, compared to 12 last week.

The largest steer string (700-899#) sold this week was (same as above) 348 steers (720#) from El Reno, Oklahoma at $184.25 (2nd highest price paid for steers at OKC West so far in 2022).  The second largest string was 176 steers (815#) from El Reno, Oklahoma at $177.85.  The average price for the top 10 steer strings sold this week was $183.00, compared to $181.21 last week.  

The highest price paid for steers (700-899#) this week was $202.75 for 70 head (730#) from Motley, Minnesota.   The second highest price paid was $200.50 for 121 head (717#) from Pratt, Kansas.   The one other steer sale this week over $200 was 60 head (720#) from Salina, Kansas at $200.25.  

The largest calf string sold this week was 95 steers (473#) from Gainesville, Missouri at $219.50.  The second largest calf string was 75 heifers (463#) from El Reno, Oklahoma at $177.00.   The average price paid this week for the top 10 calf strings was $199.03, compared to $202.33 last week.

The highest price paid for calves this week was $226.00 for 56 steers (442#) from Norton, Kansas.  The second highest price paid was $223.50 for 70 steers (468#) from Gainesville, Missouri.   The average price paid this week for the top 10 calf strings was $199.03, compared to $202.33 last week.
