The Legacy of Stucky Ranch: A Passion for Angus Cattle and a Commitment to Quality
For Gordon Stucky, a lifelong love of Angus cattle began at the age of 17, when he attended the Kansas Angus Futurity sale in search of a yearling heifer to start his own registered Angus herd. Little did he know that the $350 he paid for Blackcap A127 would be the start of a lifelong passion and commitment to producing high-quality cattle.
Since that fateful day in 1976, Stucky Ranch has become renowned for its performance-oriented herd of registered Angus cattle, with a focus on within-herd performance data and genomic technology to improve genetic selection decisions. Today, the ranch calves 450 cows each year and produces over 200 additional calves at cooperator herds, while also collecting approximately 250 embryos from genetically superior females annually.
One of the cornerstones of Stucky Ranch's success is its commitment to low-stress handling techniques and selection for breeding stock with a calm disposition. This emphasis on animal welfare not only benefits the cattle themselves but also contributes to the overall quality of the meat produced.
But it's not just the cattle that make Stucky Ranch a success. The Stucky family is deeply involved in the local community and church, with Gordon serving in leadership roles in organizations ranging from the American Angus Association to the Wichita Diocesan School Council. Their commitment to superior customer service and the production of predictable genetic results has also made them a sought-after source of registered Angus bulls for the commercial industry.
Perhaps most importantly, however, the Stucky family's legacy is one of a lifelong passion for Angus cattle and a deep respect for the land and the animals they raise. As Gordon himself says, "Angus cattle are the kind of cattle you can make a living on, but they're also the kind of cattle you can enjoy working with every day." And that, perhaps, is the true secret to the success of Stucky Ranch.
