 Friday's prices very close to all-time record highs

  • Five-weight steers averaged $349.08/cwt, down $1.56 from last week and $3.31 from the record high of $352.39/cwt two weeks ago.
  • Gordon Livestock (NE) joined the "$400 Club" with its top two all-time sales for five-weight steers.
  • Hub City Livestock (SD) dominated the seven-weight market on Feb. 12, securing 9 of the top 10 sales, all exceeding $300/cwt.
  • Stockmen's Livestock (ND) led the market on Feb. 13, posting the top sales for 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9-weight steers.
  • The National Steer Price average this week dropped to $276.73/cwt, down $1.88 from last week and $5.73 from the record $282.46/cwt two weeks ago.

7-weights from south Dakota set the bar

Fridays in the Northern Plains have become synonymous with record-breaking prices, driven by lower receipts and a high concentration of northern auctions. This past Friday was no exception, as the National Steer Price surged to $283.66, marking its highest level since January 31st and the 4th highest all-time. Leading the way were 7-weight steers, which accounted for 29% of total steer receipts and averaged $294.03, the 2nd highest on record. Notably, the top 10 sales for 7-weights all came from South Dakota, with prices exceeding $300 per CWT. Winner Livestock (Winner, SD), Magness Livestock (Huron, SD), and Ft. Pierre Livestock (Ft. Pierre, SD) were among the standout markets driving these record-setting prices.
