Red Angus Market Share Growing in Commercial Cowherds

BEEF Magazine conducts a comprehensive industry survey every five years, in part, to evaluate the genetic makeup of U.S. commercial cowherds. Survey respondents are typically above average for herd size. Their Fall 2024 survey’s average herd size was 282 mother cows.

Most of the survey respondents operate cowherds that are British based in terms of breed composition (84% of total respondents in 2024 and 88% in 2019). The balance indicate their herds contain significant Continental and/or Bos Indicus influence.

Approximately 97% of the British based herds are comprised of either Angus, Red Angus or Hereford, with the percentage representation of each breed shown in the table below.

According to BEEF’s survey, Red Angus noted a significant uptick in market share during the past five years, moving from 15% in 2019 to 20% in 2024.

Larger herds are often ahead-of-the-curve in their genetic selections, which bodes well for continued growth in the use of Red Angus genetics.
