Ranking Of States With The Most Cattle On Feed

The heartbeat of America’s cattle industry throbs strongest in Texas, Nebraska, and Kansas, where over half of the nation's cattle on feed are raised. As per the latest NASS/USDA data, the United States boasts a formidable 14.423 million head of cattle on feed, with a striking 57% of these located in the aforementioned trio of states.

Texas, the Lone Star State, leads the charge with an impressive 2.870 million head of cattle on feed, constituting nearly 20% of the U.S. total. Texas is renowned for its vast landscapes and historic ranches, providing ample space and facilities necessary for leading the nation in cattle feeding operations.

Close on its heels is the Cornhusker State, Nebraska, with 2.750 million head of cattle on feed, making up over 19% of the country's total. Nebraska's rich agricultural lands and corn production provide an essential resource for feeding and raising healthy cattle.

Kansas, with its 2.600 million head of cattle on feed, accounts for just over 18% of the national figure. The state's strong agricultural backbone supports a thriving cattle industry, essential to its economy.

Iowa and Colorado round out the top five, each with over a million head of cattle on feed. Iowa's 1.180 million and Colorado's 1.050 million head showcase the substantial role the cattle feeding industry plays in their states’ agricultural profiles.

It's notable that out of the 50 states, 16 have cattle on feed inventories exceeding 100,000 head, indicating a widespread distribution of this agricultural sector across the country. Furthermore, smaller feedlots, those with less than 1,000 head, also contribute significantly to the industry with a combined total of 2.49 million head of cattle on feed.
