Rolling B Ranch

Hardy Brumfield’s cattle roots go back two generations in the Mississippi Delta. His grandparents and then his parents all raised commercial and Angus cattle. They instilled in him a strong love for cattle and the outdoors, and an ethical foundation to do the right thing. From ages 6 to 18, Hardy was involved with cattle- on the farm, through 4H, and at shows and fairs. While he was in middle school, he and 2 brothers established the Tri B Cattle Company, raising registered Angus cows. Although Hardy graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Agriculture Economics, the 3 brothers saw opportunity outside Mississippi and their cattle, so they dispersed Tri B Cattle and moved to Chicago to be traders on the Chicago Board of Trade. Hardy met his wife Amy in Chicago and they had two children, Brooke and Thomson. After 20 years in Chicago, the family moved south to GA and their son J.D. was born there.

Hardy continued electronic trading and started investing in Georgia and Alabama timberland, but realized he really missed the cattle. In October 2017, he acquired Three Trees Ranch’s properties and Rolling B Ranch was born. In January 2018, Hardy bought his first 2 heifers; 2 years later Rolling B has approximately 1,000 mama cows! Rolling B Ranch has 3 Divisions covering over 3400 acres, all in GA- the headquarters is in the Warm Springs Division, and the Yatesville Division also manages the Thomaston Division. Rolling B Ranch’s Mission Statement says it all.

The Ranch’s focus is on feed efficiency, improving daily gain and adding value for the commercial cattleman. Rolling B utilizes ET (Embryo Transfer), IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), and AI (Artificial Insemination) on their whole herd, allowing them to multiply the genetic effects to move their herd forward quickly. Hardy believes that although EPDs are important, and many of his cattle have excellent scores and rankings, a great cow herd is more than just numbers. His cattle must perform well in real life circumstances to add the value for a commercial cowman that is his focus.

Rolling B has over 1,000 mama cows; over half of the cows are registered Angus or UltraBlack, and the rest are commercial. They raise their bull calves and are selling 60 Angus and UltraBlack in their 2021 Inaugural Bull Sale. They are scaling to yield 200 superior seedstock bulls per year for their annual Bull Sale. Rolling B has been using their heifers to increase their cow herd, but in the near future they will offer exceptional bred heifers in a spring production sale.

In addition to their own cattle operation, Rolling B Ranch operates an embryo cooperative, putting embryos in recipient cows for registered Angus clients and calving them out. They calved approximately 125 recipient cows in 2020 for clients.

Rolling B is heavily involved in making the ranches predominantly forage-based so they are currently involved in developing large scale winter and summer annuals and perennial planting, with heavy input from various agencies and seed companies.

In September 2019 Rolling B Ranch shipped 120 steers to be graded at harvest. The Nebraska numbers are in, and even though Rolling B doesn’t breed just for numbers, the steer numbers were outstanding. The last group of 38 steers had a high carcass yield percentage (ranking 66%), 23% graded Prime and 97% graded Choice or better Rolling B is sending 120 steers to be graded in Iowa later this year. They will continue to send steers to be graded- this information is important to the continued improvement in their herd.

Rolling B Ranch strives for customer satisfaction and guarantees every purchase. They want to be sure the cattle work for both their purebred and commercial buyers.
