In the world of cattle markets, 2024 has emerged as a promising year for calf prices, with a remarkable 16 sales exceeding the $390 mark. Among these, four sales even broke the $400 threshold, with three of them originating from Torrington, Wyoming. These impressive figures are indicative of a strong and vibrant cattle industry.
The demand for quality calves has been a driving force behind the surge in prices. Ranchers and cattle producers have been keen to secure these high-quality calves for breeding and future growth. The combination of robust demand and limited supply has contributed to the bullish market conditions.
One of the standout sales occurred in Yankton, South Dakota, where 14 steers were sold for an impressive $390 per head. This marked the beginning of a trend that continued to gain momentum throughout the year.
NUMBER OF CALF SALES BY LOCATION TO REACH $390 SO FAR IN 2024
Torrington, Wyoming, emerged as a hotbed for high-priced calf sales. Three separate sales in Torrington resulted in prices hitting the $400 milestone. A batch of 11 steers weighing 412 pounds, another group of 31 steers averaging 376 pounds, and an additional 11 steers weighing 405 pounds all fetched $400 per head. Torrington's consistent performance in the market underscores its significance in the cattle industry.
Other regions also witnessed impressive calf prices. In Orland, California, two sales saw prices reach $395 and $392 for 21 and 47 steers, respectively. Ogallala, Nebraska, reported sales with prices at $399 and $397.50 per head for 11 steers weighing 395 pounds and 10 steers at 385 pounds. Additionally, a substantial sale of 129 steers in Ogallala, averaging 472 pounds, brought in $397.50 per head.
Notably, La Junta, Colorado, witnessed a standout sale of 10 steers at $400 per head, demonstrating the widespread nature of strong calf prices. Fallon, Nevada, Exeter, Missouri, and El Reno, Oklahoma, also contributed to the impressive statistics with their sales ranging from $395 to $397 per head.
