Joplin LIVE:  On Pace for a Historic Day

Joplin Regional Stockyards in Carthage, MO is positioning itself for one of the most historic sales in its legendary run. Monday’s run is being dominated by powerhouse 8-weight steers, which have taken center stage, accounting for a commanding 39% of total steer receipts. These cattle aren’t just showing up in numbers—they’re setting records. The average for 8-weights on the day so far sits at an astonishing $306.15, a level that would establish a new all-time high for the barn.

What’s even more remarkable is the concentration of premium sales. The top six sales of 8-weight steers today now rank as the highest six in Joplin’s history—a testament to aggressive buyer sentiment and extreme competition for quality feeders. Here’s the elite roster so far:

Joplin’s dominance doesn’t stop with the 8-weights. Five-weight steers have emerged as the second most traded weight class so far today, comprising 22% of total steer receipts. But it’s not just volume—it’s historic value. The average price for 5-weights has rocketed to a staggering $408.44/cwt, which, if held, would establish an all-time high for the barn. The top trade of the day—80 head at 506 lbs bringing $467.50—now stands as the highest-priced 5-weight sale in Joplin’s storied history and ranks as the fifth-highest ever recorded nationally.

Meanwhile, 7-weight steers are seeing unprecedented action of their own. Joplin has already logged five of the top ten 7-weight prices in its all-time records, underscoring intense competition across the entire mid-weight segment. One standout sale saw 108 head at 746 lbs bring $342.00, a price level among the absolute best for the category in Joplin history.

And if that weren’t enough to capture national attention, the lone 3-weight trade of the day has made its own mark. A group of 10 head at 330 lbs soared to an eye-popping $590.00/cwt, now standing as the highest 3-weight sale ever recorded at Joplin.

These results highlight a feeder market in overdrive—where lighter cattle are commanding eye-watering premiums, and the heaviest weights are still holding record territory. The urgency in the marketplace is unmistakable, and today’s auction will be remembered as a defining moment in 2025’s feeder cattle run. CLARA will continue tracking the developments as receipts finalize and broader market implications unfold.
