Summary:

Scientists at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia have spent the last two decades developing a genetically modified Cavendish banana plant that is resistant to the tropical race 4 (TR4) strain of the lethal Fusarium fungus.

The fungus poses a significant threat to the world's most popular banana variety, Cavendish, and the $20 billion banana industry.

After successful field trials lasting over six years, the researchers have submitted their modified Cavendish banana, called QCAV-4, for regulatory approval to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). This would mark the world's first genetically modified Cavendish plant if approved.
