It was truly another historic week in the feeder cattle industry, with 30 national records shattered across multiple weight groups—proof that this market continues to defy expectations. Prices once thought unimaginable are now reality, with new all-time highs set for 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-weight steers. Notable sales included Farmers & Ranchers (Salina, KS), which set the 8-weight record with 64 head at 803 lbs bringing $359.75/cwt, and Bassett Livestock (Bassett, NE), which topped the 9- and 10-weight categories with 180 head at 936 lbs for $336.75/cwt and 159 head at 1,038 lbs for $318.25/cwt, respectively. These benchmark-setting sales highlight a week of extraordinary momentum in the feeder market.

Ft Pierre Livestock (Ft Pierre, SD) also had a historic sale on Friday, July 25th, setting multiple all-time records across weight classes. A standout group of 68 head at 709 lbs brought $390.00/cwt, marking the highest price ever paid for 7-weight steers in U.S. history. Additionally, 64 head weighing 827 lbs sold for $348.00/cwt—a new barn record for 8-weights, the highest ever in South Dakota, and the third-highest 8-weight price nationally. Ft Pierre also posted an exceptional run of 9-weights, with 60 head at 907 lbs bringing $325.00/cwt—one of the top five highest 9-weight sales in barn history and the second-highest price ever recorded for that class in South Dakota.

Rounding out the day, the barn reported the top five 10-weight sales in its history:

Edina Livestock Sales (Edina, MO) had a standout sale on Friday, July 25th, setting new barn records across the board for 7-, 8-, and 9-weight steers. The highlight was a group of 63 head at 911 lbs that sold for $336.50/cwt—setting a new all-time barn record, a new Missouri state record for 9-weights, and ranking as the second-highest 9-weight sale ever recorded nationally.   Another impressive lot of 65 head at 884 lbs brought $331.00/cwt, establishing a new barn high for 8-weights and the fourth-highest 8-weight price in Missouri history. The 7-weight category also made headlines, with 78 head at 741 lbs selling for $360.25/cwt—the highest 7-weight sale ever at Edina and the seventh-highest in state history. 

Feeder cattle futures rebounded on Friday, with the August CME contract closing at $331.375, up $2.475 on the day. The gain outpaced the rise in the 7-day RTI Feeder Index, which finished at $329.96, up $0.76. Meanwhile, the National Steer Price surged to $334.59, up $6.66, continuing to outpace both the futures and index values.

Friday feeder cattle sales were led by Ft Pierre, SD, with a total of 4,805 head moving through the ring. Tri-State in Abingdon, VA followed with 911 head, while Bluegrass Richmond in Kentucky sold 705. In the West, Turlock, CA reported 692 head, and Torrington Markets in Wyoming closed out with 610 head.   Feeder cattle receipts were up 17% from last Friday.

Notably, all of the top 10 highest 10-weight steer prices in U.S. history have occurred in July, underscoring the market's seasonal peak and the historic nature of this month’s run.
