CLARA LIVE: 🔥 📈 Joplin Sets Heavyweight Records as Futures Overtake Cash in Red-Hot Feeder Market 🐂🔥
If you thought the market was going to soften this week, Joplin Regional Stockyards didn’t get the memo. The barn shattered expectations again this week, setting 15 new records, including all-time highs for 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-weight steers. Highlight sales included 67 head at 701 lbs bringing $359.50, 35 head at 814 lbs at $328.00, 68 head at 909 lbs at $317.00, and 125 head at 1,036 lbs fetching $305.50. Joplin’s 8-weights averaged an impressive $316.51—beating last week’s record-setting $313.79—underscoring just how fiercely competitive the heavyweight feeder market has become.
Sioux Falls Regional Livestock (Worthing, SD) had a standout day on Monday with a major 10-weight sale of 420 head at 1,002 lbs bringing $303.75, setting a new all-time barn record and marking the largest 10-weight string in the United States to ever exceed $300. Additionally, 236 head at 985 lbs sold for $309.00, ranking as the third-highest 9-weight sale ever recorded at Sioux Falls.
Callaway Livestock Center (Kingdom City, MO) posted the top two 7-weight sales in the country on Monday, setting new barn records in the process. The standout drafts included 71 head at 758 lbs bringing $368.75 and 40 head at 753 lbs at $366.00. These sales now rank as the third- and fourth-highest prices ever recorded for 7-weight steers in Missouri history.
Feeder cattle futures surged Monday, with the August CME contract gaining $3.60 to close at $327.60, reversing Friday’s $1.00 decline. Meanwhile, the RTI 7-day Feeder Index climbed $1.36 to $326.74, and the National Steer Price dropped $3.31 to $326.94. This shift flipped the basis seen on Friday, when cash commanded a clear premium. As of Monday, futures now sit slightly above both the index and the steer price, signaling a more balanced but cautious tone between the cash and futures markets.
The largest cattle markets on Monday were led by Joplin (Carthage, MO) with 5,572 head. Sioux Falls (Worthing, SD) followed with 1,301 head, then Russell (Russell, IA) with 1,197, Callaway (Kingdom City, MO) with 1,105, and Elgin (Elgin, NE) rounding out the top five with 771 head. Receipts were down 27% from last Monday.
