Feeder cattle futures surged on Wednesday, with the August CME contract closing at $331.525, up $3.25 on the day. Meanwhile, the cash market softened—RTI’s 7-day Feeder Index slipped $0.39 to $327.86, and the National Steer Price fell $3.49 to $327.95. That puts August futures at a $3.67 premium over the RTI Index and a $3.58 premium over the National Steer Price, flipping the recent trend where cash had been leading the way.
The largest feeder cattle sales on Wednesday were led by OKC West in El Reno, OK, with 3,838 head, followed by Bassett, NE, with 2,057 head.
