Kansas Beef Cow Inventory Lowest In 65 Years

The Kansas beef cow inventory has dropped to 1.23 million head in 2025, marking its lowest level in 65 years. The last time Kansas reported numbers this low was in 1960, when the inventory stood at 1.195 million head. 

This sharp decline follows a consistent downward trend in recent years, with numbers falling from 1.57 million in 2017 to just 1.23 million in 2025, a reduction of 340,000 head in less than a decade. 

Factors such as drought conditions, rising feed costs, and herd liquidation have contributed to this sharp contraction, reflecting broader national declines in beef cattle numbers.
