5-Weight Steer Prices Off to Great Start in Kansas
The lightweight steer market in Kansas is off to a remarkable start in 2024, with buyers showing fierce competition for calves weighing between 500 and 600 pounds ("5-weights"). There have already been over 50 sales of 5-weight cattle comprising at least 10 head that have traded for an impressive $310 per hundredweight or higher across the state.
These record-high sales have been seen at markets all over Kansas including Pratt, Salina, Dodge City, St. Marys, Parsons, Winfield, Mankato, St. Francis, Fort Scott, Fredonia, Junction City, and El Dorado.
Leading the way, 14 steers weighing 515 pounds sold at Salina in January for a stellar $349 per cwt - marking the state's top price so far for a 5-weight. Dodge City captured the second highest price, with 12 head scaling 508 pounds going for $338.
Fourteen different sales of the 500-600 lb steers have cleared the $330 threshold... (remainder is unchanged).
